don't you hate it when you have a problem, yet you can't fix it easily. you know what needs to be done, but you just don't have the resources to accomplish the task.
i realized that my comment system was broken, but what am i to do on a linux machine in the middle of france? you try every avenue possible to correct one piece of code. which ended up being some type of web based ftp program that let me talk to my web server.
long story short: comments are working. moral: don't go to france without your laptop... no matter what anyone tells you.
